Is your car warranty getting ready to expire? So is mine at least according to the daily calls I get on my land line and both cell phones (one of which is a business phone that doesn’t own a car). Web research has shown that this new brand of phone spam is rampant and there is little anyone seems to be able to do about it. There are a few websites such as PhoneSpamFilter that you can look up a number to see if its on the “spam” list. But that’s about all it does despite its claim that it can stop calls. At best it appears to be keeping a database of phone numbers that people report. The problem is that the phone numbers like many email accounts are bogus.

Dealing with email spam is much easier than dealing with phone spam. You can easily delete and block email. While the Do Not Call List can reduce the number of phone calls, stopping telemarketing calls all together is nearly impossible. I keep wishing for a button on my phone that I can push that automatically “unsubscribes” me from the list. No such luck. And going through the process of talking to a person and asking to be removed from the list doesn’t work either, even though by law the company is required to remove your name.

So what is a regular citizen supposed to do? Some clever people have resorted to payback including blowing loud noises to deafen the caller and feigning getting information and then leaving the phone sitting while going off to do something else. But these things take time. The standard answer now is to see if your phone company (probably for a price) can block numbers. This probably won’t work because most of these spam callers change their CID’s (like spoofing in email) anyway. So in the end, all you can do is just not pick up the phone if you don’t recognize the number.

That’s not the answer you were hoping for, I’m sure. I know its not the answer I was wanting either. But until someone invents a phone spam filter, its probably the best course of action.

Recently I was having to modify a Word document into a new format. This required me to switch between the old document and the new one which was a hassle. Fortunately I was able to set both docs up side by side so that I could work on them simultanesouly.  You can set up other screens to view side by side or one over the other very easily.

Word Documents: If you use MS Word and need to view two word docs at the same time:

1. Open both documents.
2. Click on “View”
3. Click on “View Side by Side”

To view any other combination of screens whether its a document and spreadsheet, or a document and website:

1. Open the document or application you need.
2. Highlight the two applications you want to view by holding down the CTRL button and clicking on the application tabs.
3. Right click your mouse button and select “Show windows side by side” in Vista or “Tile Horizontally” in XP. You can choose to “Show windows Stacked” or “Tile vertically” as well.

You can also select to have three or documents on the screen but if your computer screen is small, it may not be worth the effort as the screens will be narrow particularly if side-by-side.

One of the most difficult task working in the digital world is managing passwords. The easiest way is to have one password for everything, but it leaves you vulnerable. If someone gets it, they have access to EVERYTHING. So you have to have different passwords for all your log ins. But how do you remember them all?

One trick is to have a base keyword that is part of all your logins and is tweaked slightly for each program. For example, your base keyword could be mypassword (no don’t use that. This is just an example). Your eBay password could then be something like mypasswordeb or ebmypassword. This creates a separate password for everything that’s based in a single root word. The trick of course is remembering how you choose the specific variant for each program. Again you want to be creative. If you use the initials for all of them and someone figures out your base word, they’ll be able to figure out your specific logins as well.

Perhaps the best option is to store all your passwords. The problem with that is if someone gets your PC information, they will have your password information as well. Unless you use a program like KeePass. KeePass is a software that stores all your passwords in a safe, secure, encrypted file that is accessed with a single password. You can store all your login information including username, password, URL and details about the login. You can even group them by categories you designate.

KeePass is free and easy to use. The trick of course will be to remember the login information you create for the program.
